There are many more problems with goat keeping. These are most common illnesses and problems that we often see while our goat keeping. If in doubt, call your vet.

Emergency Medication / Supplement
- Dexamethasone Injection - IM
Anti- inflammatory Head injuries or "Brain burn" Shock Following Stroke / Cerebral vascular accidents (mastitis, metritis, traumatic gastritis and pyelonephritis, arthritic conditions, snake bite, acute mastitis, shipping fever, pneumonia, laminitis and retained placenta), Induce labor (parturation) before 144 days, Acute or chronic bacterial infections STORAGE : Store between 2-30°C (36-86°F). WITHDRAWAL : Milk 72 hours. Meat none **CAUTION: Do not use in pregnant does, it can cause them to abort. **CAUTIONS: Because of the anti-inflammatory action of corticosteroids, signs of infection may be masked. Overdosage of some glucocorticoids may result in sodium retention, fluid retention, potassium loss and weight gain. **DO NOT USE in combination with medications of the NSAID class (ie, Banamine (flunixin meglumine), aspirin, phenylbutazone (bute) [note: Bute may reduce the effects of corticosteroids], etc.) the combination of these medications could lead to bleeding in the stomach or intestine. USES AND DOSE RATES Use the smallest dose that achieves the desired effect in order to limit adverse side effects. - Anti-inflammatory : 1/2ml ~ 1ml /20 Lbs (doses are 10 times the physiological levels) It prevents the development of the inflammatory response. As an anti-inflammatory and pain reliever for joint and bone injuries (The relationship between dexamethasone and delayed bone healing without infection remains unresolved.) - For head injuries or "brain burn" (overheating at disbudding time): 1-2mg /20 Lb - For shock : 1-2mg/20 Lb 1) Increase capillary blood flow (improved circulation) 2) Decrease absorption of endotoxins 3) Decrease production of Myocardial Depressant Factor 4) Decrease organ damage. - Following Stroke / other cerebral vascular accidents : 1-2mg/20 Lb Combined with thiamine (B1) to help reverse brain swelling associated with polioencephalomalacia (Polio). -Ketosis : 4-8ml Glucocorticoid reaction. The gluconeogenic effects of dexamethasone, when administered intramuscularly, are generally noted within the first 6-12 hours (faster via IV route). Blood sugar levels rise to normal levels within 12-24 hours. Acetone bodies are reduced to normal concentrations usually within 24 hours. The physical attitude of animals brightens and appetite improves, usually within 12 hours. Milk production, which is suppressed as a compensatory reaction in this condition, begins to increase. The recovery process usually takes from three to seven days. -Allergic reactions to insect bites or other allergens:1/2 ~ 1ml / 20 Lb, 5-8ml to an adult doe, repeat in 12-24 hour As supportive therapy in mastitis, metritis, traumatic gastritis and pyelonephritis, while appropriate primary therapy is administered. In these cases, the corticosteroid combats accompanying stress and enhances the feeling of general well-being. As supportive therapy while an animal is recuperating from severe debilitation and therefore eats better during the very critical period of early recuperation As supportive therapy in inflammatory conditions, such as arthritic conditions, snake bite, acute mastitis, shipping fever, pneumonia, laminitis and retained placenta. -To induce labor (parturation) before 144 days: Dex is the drug of choice for increasing the chance of live kids when inducing labor/paturation before 144 days. -May be used in animals with acute or chronic bacterial infections providing that the infections are controlled with appropriate antibiotics or chemotherapeutic agents. CONTRAINDICATIONS : Except for emergency therapy, do not use in animals with chronic nephritis (kidney disease). The existence of congestive heart failure, diabetes and osteoporosis are relative contraindications. Do not use in viral infections during the viremic stage. By Goat 101 Saanendoah info |
Oral pain killer / inflammation, fever reducer
- Aspirin - Oral 325mg (1 adult aspirin) / 10 Lb - Every 12 hours **Caution: Do not use if goat is bleeding - aspirin is a blood thinner Aspirin dose is the same no matter the age ( 325mg per 10#) babies may do better taking baby aspirin. - Baby aspirin - Oral 81mg (1 Baby Aspirin) 4 / 10 Lb Would not need that many to the goat but a few baby aspirin may help take the edge off - Children's Ibuprofen - Oral children’s liquid is easy to dose 1ml / 10 Lb ( may prevent blood from clotting, avoid if goat is bleeding) |
~Antibiotics ~
Antibiotics, most often used
**Don't feed milk 4 hours after antibioitcs. To clarify no yogurt, cows milk, formula mixes for four hours. Natural breast milk for the species is fine after 2 hours. Cows milk has an enzyme that deactivates many antibiotics especially of the Tetracycline classes ( NOTE: Liz Weir called the company that makes LA 20o and was told this is true only if given orally)
-RX-
Tylan 200: 1 ml/ 25Lb SQ twice daily
Tylan 50: 4 ml / 25Lb SQ 2 times a day
(only recommended for tiny babies as dose would be too much for larger goats)
Nuflor: 3 ml SQ /100 Lb once daily once daily
Resflor Gold: 3 cc/100 Lb once daily for 5 days (Resflor gold is a combined medication of Nuflor and Banamine. I don’t recommend this blend as doses and frequency of each are quite different - Nuflor being daily for 5 days at 1mil / 33 Lb and Banamine once a day for 3 days at 1ml/100 Lb. Its better to give each separately to be sure dose and frequency is correct.)
Excede:1 ml / 40# SQ (this is one antibiotic dosed 4 days apart)
Baytril 100: 4 ml/100 Lb SQ once daily
Naxcel : 4-5 ml / 100 Lb SQ kids 1/2 ml ~ 1 ml /25 Lb
(this should not be confused with Excede dose and frequency.)
Excenel: Dose daily at 6 ml / 100 Lb
Day One: dose twice 12 hours apart.
Days 2 through 5: dose once daily.
Draxxin: 1 ml /100 Lb once, booster in 7 days ("I prefer to use along with Nuflor between doses")
Anafen: 3mg /2.2 Lb every 24 hours
METRONIDAZOLE TABLETS (500 mg) : For treatment of Giardia, resulting in diarrhea from ingestion of fetid water, caused by goat berries or poultry feces in water source. Also can be used for scouring kids and adults when Coccidiosis is not the underlying cause.
Works effectively against eColi and other digestive system bacterial infections.
Dosage is ½ pill, morning and night for adult Nigerians, half that for babies over 1 month of age, for 5 days. Crush pill and drizzle w/ molasses.
Use just enough hot water to be able to draw into syringe.
(Not my first choice, due to the length of time needed here. Store away from sunlight.)
-OTC meds-
Know your Penicillin for proper frequency...Regular Penn and 48 Hour Penn
Penicillin G Procaine: 1 ml / 20Lb SQ twice daily
Combi-Pen 48: 1 ml /20 Lb once a day (considered a long acting med)
LA 200: 1ml / 20Lb SQ once daily
( try to get Biomycin, same meds, less sting)
