Every now and then, we get surprise babies with extra teats. Even though we have had perfect babies with normal teats from the same doe year after year. How did it happen? What do we do?
At our farm, we have had extra teats Boer goat doe. It was actually surprising because this doe had more than just one extra but several extra teats and each was able to milk!! I found out that in meat goat world, it is quite common and they do not care about them having extra teats. The reason is because they do not milk like dairy goats. Meat goats always dam raise and it does not bother the breeders.
How about with dairy goats? It's actually very much "NO, NO" thing in dairy goat world. Imagine how it is like having extra teats like the Boer doe that I had to milk on the milking stand with a machine?
It's ethical thing as a dairy goat breeder to cull (this means, sell as a pet without registration.) this type of goats from the breeding program. It is extremely hard thing to do when you were waiting for certain breeding and found extra tiny teats on the baby's teat. While they loos so tiny, you want to ignore it because otherwise, this baby was absolutely perfect!
..... yes, I went through that once....
